Lots of lights, a traditional market, activities for children, and the return of the Nativity Scene to Cathedral Square, while also displaying nativity scenes in Trascorrales Square, are the ingredients of the Christmas programme designed by the City Council for the enjoyment of the residents of Oviedo and visitors alike, and to support local trade and hospitality businesses. A combination that attracts many people between December 6 and the day of the Epiphany.

A tunnel of light

A spectacular tunnel of light in Pelayo Street together with a bright 4-metre high reindeer opposite the Campoamor are the most striking elements of a powerful and innovative Christmas lighting design consisting of more than one million lights that, without neglecting the classic Cross of the Angel lights on Uría Street, are now concentrated in the streets with the greatest number of shops, bars, and restaurants. The main promenades in Campo San Francisco and some of the busiest squares and spots, such as meeting points, the section from the City Council Square (Plaza del Ayuntamiento) to the roundabout at the beginning of La Florida or Pedro Miñor Square, are also lit up at Christmas with striking elements that, in many cases, are also intended for selfies.

Mas luz

La iluminación navideña se amplía este año con un nuevo contrato que incluye elementos singulares tanto en el centro como en los barrios y alcanza a un total de 185 calles y 47 puntos estratégicos. El exitoso túnel luminosos de la calle Pelayo se alarga y queda precedido por un gran abeto artificial, mientras que una gran rosa, una estrella peatonal y un photocall gigante decoran a plaza del Ayuntamiento, la Escandalera y el Paseo de los Álamos, donde también hay paneles luminosos con figuras de animales. La iluminación se prolongará en esta zona por los paseos principales que suben por el Campo.

From turrón to roscón

In this season, Fontán Square sells the best quality meat, fish, vegetables, cured meats, and cheese for the Christmas celebrations. However, the production of the famous pastry shops of Oviedo is another attraction during these feasts for people with a sweet tooth. Visitors will see long queues in the turrón shops – the most traditional, since 1878, can be found in Cimadevilla Street – and you may be surprised that, alongside traditional turrón (hard, soft, yolk….), they sell chocolate “bars” and cakes as if they were giant bonbons. In the new year, the roscón de Reyes takes over from the turrón. The roscón can be made of dough with orange blossom water, puff pastry, special fillings... there is an extensive selection.
