CULTURE

Visiting Oviedo at any time of the year is an opportunity to enjoy cultural tourism. No one doubts that the capital of the Principality is one of Spain's leading musical venues. Proof of this is the fact that Oviedo and Madrid are the only two cities in the country that programme a Zarzuela season, of which Oviedo has already held 27 editions. The capital of Asturias also hosts the second oldest opera season in the country, after Barcelona, and offers other festivals and cycles that attract leading world figures from various artistic fields to Asturias. Examples of this are the Concerts in the Auditorium, the Jornadas Internacionales de Piano Luis G. Iberni (Luis G. Iberni International Piano Festival), or the Dance and Baroque Music festivals that take place throughout the year.

The cultural programme also includes various theatre and film seasons, a wide range of museums, as well as cultural festivals that bring art and culture to all the citizens free of charge. Among these, a key event is La Noche Blanca (The White Night).

Our own music

The music, in all its specialties, it's so important in Oviedo that the city has three own formations: the Oviedo Filarmonía Orchestra, the Oviedo Music Band and the Royal Ciudad de Oviedo Bagpipe Band.

Oviedo Filarmonía, created in 1999, and currently directed by the conductor Lucas Macías, it's the resident group of the Lyrical Theater Festival, although in addition to Zarzuela it participates in many of the municipality cultural programs with symphonic concerts, summer programs, concerts for children, concerts of movie soundtracks... Oviedo Filarmonía belongs to the Ciudad de Oviedo Musical Foundation, algo belongs the Oviedo Music Band also belongs, whose manager is David Colado.

Founded in 1992, the Oviedo Music Band, offers a large number of concerts throughout the year (in spring in the San Francisco Park and in the winter, in the auditorium) and participates in parades, processions and a multitude of festive and official events.

Oviedo's third own musical formation is the bagpipe band, wich has the Rosal title  since 2017. Together with its president, Adolfo García Blanco, lead the Band José Manual Fernández Gutiérrez, “Guti”, Vicente Prado, “El Pravianu”; and Yolanda Pérez, “Yoli”. Created in 1992, the Royal Bagpipe Band offers more than 130 performances throughout the year at parties, official events, receptions... To face the innumerable requests it receives to perform and ensure its continuity, in 1999 the “Vetusta” Bagpipe Band was created, with members under 18 years of age.
