ZARZUELA, DANCE AND OPERA

For many people, Oviedo is a key cultural landmark in northern Spain, a city with its own rhythm, where it is easy to follow the beat. It is marked on the calendar:

The year begins with the Zarzuela Festival in the Campoamor Theatre in February. This year will be the 29th edition, making this city the only one, together with Madrid, to have a public lyric theatre season.

The Opera Season, from September to February and also in the Campoamor Theatre, is as an institution in itself. Not in vain, it is the second oldest opera season in Spain and brings to the stage of Asturian coliseum the best international productions.

The history of opera in Oviedo dates back to the 17th century and the Casa de Comedias in El Fontán, today the Ramón Pérez de Ayala Library. The primitive building, renovated in the 19th century, maintained the city's lyrical activity until the end of the century.

The same stage hosts the Dance Festival from March to June, which brings to the capital the leading dancers and companies in the world, including the best selection of Spanish dance and contemporary dance.
