Naranco

NARANCO

The history of Oviedo began on the slopes of a mountain, the Naranco, which still today seems to protect its inhabitants.

Sheltered by this 635 metre high mount, the capital of the Principality is still expanding and it is on the skirt of this mountain where one of the greatest jewels of Asturias is kept, two of the best examples of the Asturian pre-Romanesque, declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO in 1985: Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo.

The Naranco, three kilometres from the city centre, which was originally a Roman military camp, royal residence or battlefield, is still a key point for the inhabitants of Oviedo, who do not hesitate to climb it to enjoy the amazing views of the city either for exercise or for a picnic.
