Family Tourism

Oviedo, declared a "Child Friendly City" by UNICEF, is also an ideal tourist destination for families as its cultural and leisure activities are designed for the enjoyment of our youngest visitors. In addition to the specific theatre cycle for children that is scheduled every year in the various theatres around the city, other events, workshops and recreational activities are organised for them during every festivity. For example, during San Mateo, the major festivity in the capital of Asturias, Campo San Francisco Park becomes a wonderful venue that children and their families can access free of charge to enjoy a variety of magic shows, juggling, and plays; in addition to games, bouncy castles and attractions that are also provided in other parts of the city.

At Christmas, Oviedo stages one of the oldest Cavalcades of the Magi in all of Spain for the young and old alike. Oviedo’s parade remains faithful to tradition and avoids the trend followed in many other cavalcades around the country, in which modern-day cartoon characters are included. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular parades you can attend in Asturias. In 2020, as many as 1,600 extras participated. During these festivities, an ice rink, a giant slide, children's workshops, and a Christmas market are also available, not forgetting the striking Christmas lights that you can enjoy as you stroll through the city. The events programmed for the festivities of La Ascension and San Juan (Saint John) always include special activities for families, including workshops and traditional games for the youngest.

The children's programme also includes Storytellers (for children who are 4 or older) and Babystories (for babies from 0 to 3). These events are organised by the Municipal Network of Libraries of the Oviedo City Council during the school year and are provided free of charge.

In addition, during their visit to Oviedo, children can also enjoy the following parks and facilities:

More than a hundred street sculptures

You will find more than one hundred urban sculptures throughout Oviedo; basically a street museum. Works of different styles and value, some of which have almost become icons while others represent events, people, customs…connected with the city.

The people of Oviedo often use them as meeting points when they go out with friends. You can admire them when you come across them or you can use them as landmarks as you walk through the city. There is even a “Sculpture Route” in the city centre which, if you are travelling with your family, might be a fun option for the children.
