SAN JUAN AND ROMERÍAS

The Night of San Juan (St. John).

On the eve of 24 June, Oviedo celebrates San Juan/San Xuan, the summer solstice festival of cleansing fire.

This festival dedicated to the worship of fire and bonfires is held in the capital with the lighting of two large bonfires, one in the central area and another in the most densely populated neighbourhood of the capital, La Corredoria. There are also bonfires in rural areas.

There is no lack of traditional dancing and music. The Danza Prima, which is danced around the bonfire, is the ritual per excellence.
