Teatro Filarmónica (Philharmonic Theatre)

Teatro Filarmónica (Philharmonic Theatre)

The Teatro Filarmónica, located in Mendizabal Street, almost opposite Porlier Square, is the second municipal theatre in importance although its origin is linked to the Philharmonic Society, which has its headquarters and archive here.

The Filarmónica opened in 1944 and was thoroughly updated in 2004. With 800 seats on two floors, this facility is the venue for the City Council’s theatre and film programmes and, although it has a very small stage, it hosts a wide range of events, such as galas, awards ceremonies, as well as the performances of the City of Oviedo Folklore Exhibition and Competition (Concurso y Muestra de Folclore Ciudad de Oviedo), and the concert programme of the Philharmonic Society.

In premises attached to the theatre itself, which are run by the Municipal Culture Foundation (FMC), there are offices and rehearsal rooms for the City of Oviedo Music Foundation and its orchestra, Oviedo Filarmonía, which is the city’s symphonic orchestra; the Sociedad Ovetense de Festejos (SOF - Oviedo Festivities Agency) and the choirs of the Fundación Princesa de Asturias Foundation (FPA - Princess of Asturias Foundation).

Opposite the Filarmónica, on the corner of Porlier Square, a plaque recalls that this was once the Jewish quarter of Oviedo.
